What makes us special
We set about the decoration of this very special place with one aim in mind; to make it the most comfortable, most welcoming, most private, most beautiful sanctuary we could imagine; a place where you, our guests, will feel genuinely cared for. We have combined many of the luxuries of a top hotel with the charm and freedom of your own period country cottage.
Arriving at the Cottage in the Garden you will be struck by the sheer beauty of its setting and the staggering views all the way to the South Downs, amongst the best in Sussex. Throughout we have aimed to create an atmosphere of both elegance and simplicity with many unique touches.
The living room and bedroom are large, high ceilinged and airy with pale painted floorboards and huge rugs thrown down. We leave a jug of milk, butter, pots of homemade preserves in the fridge and maybe some home made shortbread or cake for tea; fluffy bath towels and matching dressing gowns will be airing in the bathroom, (after all, who wants to pack a heavy dressing gown?) You will find the huge bed made up with beautiful linen from The White Company, and fresh flowers in the rooms, supplied in summer from our own cutting garden.
If you wish we can leave supper ready for you, the table laid, wine ready for you to open, breakfast tucked away for the morning. Details on our Welcome Supper page
For our guests staying longer than one week we provide a weekly change of freshly laundered linen, free of charge. In the winter we will have made up the woodburner ready to light and left a supply of logs.
The large kitchen has a period dresser with matching china, glass, cutlery, kitchen tools and all the pans you are likely to need. Keen cooks will find a huge chopping board, razor sharp knives, plenty of utensils and even crab and lobster crackers and picks (our local farmers’ market sells excellent shellfish and the coast is not far away).
The modern units house washing machine, tumble drier, integrated fridge, dishwasher, microwave and a cooker with grill, double oven and ceramic hob.
A lobby leads from the bedroom to the bathroom with its charming old gothic window. Over the bath with its pressured shower is a large Velux window revealing the green tree canopy above. The separate lavatory is adjacent.
Privacy is another asset of the Cottage in the Garden which is some distance from the main house and wholly un-overlooked. On the veranda you will find sun loungers as well as the pretty bench shown in our photos, which guests find an enticing seat for a relaxing drink. In summer the sloping lawn below the veranda or stoop is a mass of wild flowers and folding chairs are provided for guests who enjoy sitting in their own little meadow.
The remote location gives an intense ‘away from it all’ feeling. The birdsong in spring is wonderful, all year the buzzards hunt in the valley below and at night our resident tawny owls hoot from the tall trees. It is rare to hear a vehicle, occasionally a tractor, more often the sound of horses’ hooves on the lane........
The Cottage in the Garden really is another world
